Tadej Poga\u010dar, born on September 21, 1998, is a Slovenian professional cyclist who rides for UCI WorldTeam UAE Team Emirates. He won the Tour de France in both 2020 and 2021, claiming three different jerseys in each Tour, a feat not seen in nearly forty years. In 2024, he triumphed in the Giro d'Italia, also securing the mountains classification and six stages. Renowned for his prowess in time trials, one-day classics, and grand-tour climbing, Poga\u010dar has drawn comparisons to legendary all-round cyclists like Eddy Merckx and Bernard Hinault.<\/p>
In 2019, at age 20, Poga\u010dar became the youngest cyclist to win a UCI World Tour race with his victory at the Tour of California. That same year, in his debut Grand Tour at the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a, he won three stages, finished third overall, and claimed the young rider title. In his first two Tour de France appearances, he won three stages and the overall race, along with the mountains and young rider classifications, becoming the first rider to achieve this triple victory simultaneously. Poga\u010dar is the first Slovenian winner of the Tour de France and, at 21, the second-youngest winner in history after Henri Cornet, who won in 1904 at 19. He is also the first road cyclist to surpass the 6,000-point barrier in the UCI World Ranking and has won the National Time Trial Championship three times (2019, 2020, 2023).<\/p>
Poga\u010dar holds the record for most wins of the white jersey at the Tour de France, achieving it four times and holding it for a record 75 days. He has won six one-day Monuments across three different events (Tour of Flanders once, Li\u00e8ge\u2013Bastogne\u2013Li\u00e8ge twice, and Giro di Lombardia three times), as well as Paris-Nice once and Tirreno\u2013Adriatico twice. In 2021, he became the first Tour de France winner to also earn an Olympic medal in the same year, winning bronze in the men's road race.<\/p>
Currently, Poga\u010dar is the men's UCI road racing world number one, holding the record for the most total weeks and consecutive weeks in this position. He finished the 2021, 2022, and 2023 seasons as the world number one.<\/p>
